Education: |
I embarked on my academic journey at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh, where I earned my undergraduate (BSc, 1993) and graduate (MSc, 1994) degrees from the Department of Geography. However, it was at Durham University in the United Kingdom, under the Commonwealth Scholarship Program, that I pursued my PhD (2002-2006) in the Department of Geography, marking a significant turning point in my career. Over the span of my professional life, which now spans 25 years, I have cultivated a robust foundation in leadership, partnership development, policy contributions, and the promotion of equitable transitions in the fields of environment and climate change. A wealth of information about my achievements, contributions, and experiences is available at www.tawhidulislam.com. My journey unfolds across several dimensions: Intellectual Capacities for Skills Development and Knowledge Creation: In my roles as a teacher and currently as a Professor and Director, I have honed my ability to effectively convey complex concepts to students, nurturing their critical thinking abilities. My research portfolio comprises over 70 projects, delving into issues encompassing environmental pollution, disaster, climate change impacts, and social inequalities. I employ an arsenal of geospatial tools, including data analysis, GIS, GPS, radar, drones, and scientific models, to scrutinize real-world scenarios. These efforts have culminated in a prolific publication record, with over 40 scientific articles and books serving as a testament to my unwavering commitment to knowledge generation. International Collaboration and Leadership: Recognizing the power of collaborative ideation, I have diligently forged partnerships with agencies worldwide. My success in this realm is attributed to my dedication to acquiring technical knowledge and language skills, which has enabled me to adapt and thrive in diverse, cross-cultural contexts. My initiation into this approach began during my doctoral studies in the UK, where I engaged with distinguished organizations such as the Macaulay Institute and ITC. In the present day, I continue to actively collaborate with institutions like the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-INWEH). Roles in Policy Formulation and Institution Building: My impact extends to the formulation of vital policies in Bangladesh, as exemplified by my contributions to national reports on environmental issues, disaster management, and climate change. A defining achievement in my career was my pivotal role in establishing Bangladesh's first postgraduate institute for geospatial science at Jahangirnagar University in 2019. This endeavor required adept persuasion skills and navigational expertise to secure approvals from multiple government bodies. The institute, today, provides invaluable support to various ministries in Bangladesh, underscoring my prowess in institution-building. Experience in Impact Assessment Studies: My portfolio boasts over 50 impact assessments undertaken for national and international donor agencies, spanning regions such as Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. These assessments encompass a diverse spectrum, from environmental projects to disaster and humanitarian initiatives. My familiarity with OECD/DAC impact evaluation criteria and MEAL (Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning) practices, including baseline surveys, mid-term reviews, terminal evaluations, and log-frame analysis, positions me as a seasoned expert in evaluating program effectiveness.
