Professional Experience: |
I have worked in relief and development since 1992 in Russia, Croatia, Bosnia, Eritrea, Albania, DRS, Ghana, Haiti, Libya and Ukraine as well as managing and supporting programs in the Middle East and other areas of Africa.
I am recovering from knee surgery and will be ready to return to a field assignment by early April.
I am an entrepreneurial leader who knows how to build relationships externally and internally that bring diverse perspectives and creative ideas to organizational challenges. I am a confident and effective spokesperson and a strong writer who can build trust and relationships through transparency, patience, and metrics externally, and internally, I constantly work to foster cross-team collaboration that feeds innovation, scaling, and impact.
I have extensive experience in business development with USG donors as well as developing grant proposals for UN, European, corporate, foundation and HNW individual donors. I also have experience with strategic planning at the country, regional and agency level.
I have recruited, built, trained, and mentored diverse teams of talented staff across cultures, languages (French and Serbo-Croatian in addition to Russian), and time zones. I work equally effectively side by side with colleagues and via remote management and have managed both program/technical and management staff.
I have overseen regional programs comprised of dozens of project worth tens of millions of dollars managed by hundreds of staff. My background also includes extensive overseas experience working and living in challenging operating environments including insecure settings where staff safety must constantly be monitored.
As a team leader, I believe in service leadership and subsidiarity. I always seek to ensure my team has the human, material, intellectual and financial resources they need to do their job well, on time, and on budget. I work to empower my team and push decision making down to the lowest appropriate level rather than pulling it up to my level. I build consensus where possible but can make difficult decisions when and where needed, especially about the allocation of limited resources. I work with each team member on career pathing and support the professional development of each individual to get the skills and experiences they need to move their careers forward in the direction they want.
And finally, I have worn many hats in my career and am always ready to pinch hit for a colleague when there’s a critical gap that needs filling. I am always ready to tackle that last line in any job description “other duties as may be assigned by supervisor”! I enjoy a job that allows me to think through a personal work plan for the next day, week and month, but that is also full of unexpected challenges and opportunities and problems to be solved.
My skills and experiences will make me a good fit for roles in regional or country program leadership (Regional Director, Deputy RD, Country Director, Deputy CD, Head of Field Office), emergency deployments, or roles in Business Development. And, I am open to other roles in agency leadership or other assignments where my experience can benefit an agency committed to making a difference in the world.
