Professional Experience:
For 15 years I have been working very successfully in non-profit management, education and science, always striving to bring about improvements and create the structures that enable the changes. As an enthusiastic networker, I succeeded in the role of coordinator of a research program by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, and as founder of the Pompeii Sustainable Preservation Project I brought together people from different fields and cultural backgrounds to achieve more through teamwork. My communication skills allow me to attract supporters and raise the funds necessary to implement my project ideas. For example, in my perspective ancient Pompeii was an ideal but underutilized research and training site for the conservation science sector. In order to optimize its potential, I started the international "Pompeii Sustainable Preservation Project" and then raised the money necessary to jump start its activities. The project created new spaces for research and teaching in conservation, offering alternative learning paths for students and young professionals beyond the traditional, often inefficient university structures. The project is still active and its training initiatives will be included among the ICCROM (UNESCO) courses. In March 2016, I took the opportunity to start working as Executive Director of the international Care-for-Rare Foundation (Dr. von Haunersches Kinderspital/LMU Munich). The foundation, which was awarded the German "Science Foundation of the Year 2016," is committed to the well-being of children with rare diseases worldwide. In my position, I successfully restructured the foundation's strategic fundraising and in five years my team and I were able to continuously increase the foundation's annual income from €1.5 million to €3.1 million. At the same time, I reviewed and changed the international scholarship programs, founded the sister foundation Care-for-Rare America and established Care-for-Rare gGmbH, a social enterprise that combines diagnosis and research in the field of genomic sequencing to better help children with rare, chronical, serious diseases.
Education:
Foreign cultures and intercultural communication have fascinated me since my school days: for this reason I turned to classical antiquity and art history in my studies. One of my goals was to learn all I could about the cultures closest to me with a ‘past perspective’ and, in order to get to know as many aspects of these disciplines as possible, I attended classes at different universities, namely in Munich, Freiburg, Florence, Cologne, and Bonn, while I wrote my doctorate in Rome. As a student, I had the chance to gain experience in international project management during excavations in Turkey and Egypt. After 6 years working in academia, I set out to devote my efforts to building the infrastructure and logistics of a project that would allow me to work efficiently in the field of science and education. In order to obtain the necessary skills in the field of business administration, accounting and controlling, I trained as an NPO manager and was able to gain experience in the management of a non-profit organization in my work as CEO of a foundation with the ‘Learning by Doing’ process. In 2020, I completed a training to become a competence balance coach, which has provided me with additional soft skills necessary to a good manager. Moreover, I developed skills that enable me to familiarize myself with new subject areas constantly. My motto is: Only those who keeps on learning and look at the world with open eyes can bring about changes to help others.
