As Director of Donor Services and Special Projects at NEO Philanthropy, a philanthropic intermediary that is rooted in social justice and progressive values, I led the growth of the department from under $10 million in revenue in 2017 to close to $45 million in 2021. A big part of this growth was adding new-to-NEO donors and engaging in donor education; over the past four years, I have successfully cultivated new donors, ranging from foundations to Donor-Advised Funds to individual donors, all the while maintaining strong relationships with existing donors in a time of fast growth for both NEO and the department. At that time, I also had the opportunity to engage in depth with the Ford Foundation. Through my role in Business Development at EngenderHealth, a global NGO working to advance the reproductive rights of women around the world, I demonstrated my ability to acquire bilateral and multilateral funding for the organization in tight deadlines. Working in teams on different donor proposals, ranging from USAID to European donors and other multilateral donors, I prepared background documents, led technical discussions, and prepared budgets. On more than one occasion, I singlehandedly managed a proposal from start to finish, both on the technical and cost side, working with country offices, technical advisors, and different unit functions at EngenderHealth NY.
As Program Portfolio Specialist at EngenderHealth, I served as program lead and HQ liaison for teams in 7 countries, including Francophone West Africa, Burundi, and Ethiopia. I worked with different cultures and a variety of programs for women and girls, ranging from sexual and reproductive health and maternal health to gender-based violence. I learned through this work what makes an effective and sustainable program: one that considers the cultures, ideas, dreams and aspirations of the populations we wish to serve. I was responsible for annual workplanning, quarterly financial and narrative reporting, and communicating with donors, including from US-based foundations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Anonymous, and Hewlett Foundation.
