Professional Experience:
I am a nutrition scientist whose research has culminated in seminal peer-reviewed papers documenting faecal oral pathways of bacteria transmission in infants and young children in Zimbabwe and the potential causal link between household hygiene, and exposure to aflatoxins, and stunting. My education background in Food Science and International Nutrition and over 14 years of research and work experience in low income contexts equip him with unique, interdisciplinary knowledge and critical analytical skills necessary to provide cross-cutting solutions to alleviate acute and chronic child under nutrition.
Through doctoral studies in International Nutrition and research in sub-Saharan Africa, I am well versed with the underlying biological mechanisms and socio-economic determinants of maternal and child undernutrition. My PhD dissertation was a synthesis of food safety, microbiology, nutrition and epidemiology. From in-depth ethnographic methods to study WASH-related behaviours in rural Zimbabwe to rigorous data analysis on WASH and nutrition data in the context of infant and young child feeding in Ethiopia, I have acquired strong skills in using mixed methods. I have also acquired great contextual knowledge of various actors in health systems, operations and bottlenecks in delivery of child health and nutrition interventions.
Currently, I serve as a leading food and nutrition scientist in planning, designing and implementing a mycotoxin mitigation RCT to study the potential causal effect of aflatoxins on child stunting in central Tanzania. Previously, I served as a technical advisor to a USAID supported project (WASHPaLs) on research focusing on creating a hygienic play space for Infants and Young Child (IYC). I have also conducted several critical reviews of the scientific and programmatic evidence on integrating WASH and nutrition to inform research, policy and programming for WASHPaLs, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), World Bank and UNICEF, India. Through these activities, I am well versed with the current scientific evidence and approaches integrating WASH and nutrition. I have strong analytical skills relating to research design, implementation and management, and data analysis. I am proficient with the use of STATA statistical package in managing and analysing relatively large data sets.
