I've been working in the diplomatic field for 26 years. My first assignment abroad as a diplomat was in Belgium where my responsibilities were not only focused on bilateral relations with the country but also with Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the European Union and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. Since leaving Belgium I have been mostly assigned to the bilateral section where I covered a number of countries from Asia to the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. In 2012, I was assigned to Brunei Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York as Deputy Permanent Representative. I was able to widen my knowledge in multilateral diplomacy and negotiations while I was there. After completing my tour of duty in New York I was appointed as Ambassador to Timor-Leste where I was tasked to complete the setting up of the Embassy in the capital, Dili. Although my assignment in Timor-Leste was short-lived, I completed my task and was able to network extensively not only with the host country’s Government but also with various UN agencies and NGOs based there. In 2018, I was appointed as Deputy Permanent Secretary and my responsibility was to develop and implement policies with regard to the United Nations and its affiliated agencies, as well as other international organisations such as the Commonwealth and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in order to strengthen Brunei’s involvement in the international arena. While holding the position, I was involved in various preparations of materials such as statements for the Head of State and Foreign Minister, Brunei National Report for the Universal Periodic Review in 2019 and Brunei Voluntary National Review on the Sustainable Development Goals in 2020.
