Professional Experience:
A graduate of the University of Queensland in Australia; He is an Honorary Professor of the Conservation Tillage Research Centre at China Agricultural University and Gansu Agricultural University and an Adjunct Research Fellow at the University of Southern Queensland and Visiting Scientist at the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences PR China.
Dr McHugh recently led an integrated Conservation Agriculture (CA) research program in North Asia for the Global Sustainable Intensification Program at CIMMYT from 2012-2016. More recently he was Chief of Party for the $36M USAID funded Machinery and Irrigation activity Phase 1 and Phase 2 for CIMMYT in Bangladesh. Previously he led several programs within irrigation, natural resource management, agricultural bio-systems and agricultural engineering in Northern Australia and China. As a cropping systems agronomist, senior scientist and applied research engineer, he has been involved in the regeneration of degraded agricultural soils and CA farming systems for most of his career in the greater Asiatic region, especially with ACIAR, University of Queensland and University of Southern Queensland, and Queensland Government as a project leader. Additionally, in this region, he has over 23 years of experience in technology transfer and capacity building events.
Dr McHugh’s work has been presented at 46 National and International conferences and in 28 peer reviewed articles. His 48 technical reports, factsheets and case studies include spatial variability, proximal sensors, irrigation efficiency and soil structure under CA systems.
I hold a Doctorate in Agricultural Science (Machinery and Soil), B. App. SC. in Horticultural Technology, and an Assoc. Dip. in Mechanical Engineering. My doctorate in agricultural science focused on soil regeneration with novel changes in farming practices, such as; conversion to controlled traffic farming, permanent bed farming, zero till systems and conservation agriculture, the benefits and results of which were well ahead of their time.
