Professional Experience:
In my current role at Northumberland County Council I have rotated across several services working on projects all aimed towards local development in the region. This has covered a range of areas including but not limited to food poverty, education reform, political and economic devolution, communication & engagement, organisational development, customer services, apprenticeship programme development and social care transition.
Each role has required the management of several projects simultaneously with differing and competing time frames. The type of work required for these projects was as different as the areas including research based reports, weekly communication briefings, leading on conference organisation, consensus building with internal and external partners and mentoring & coaching of staff and students.
This work often included starting in new areas of the local authority where I'd previously had no experience and required intense studying and learning on the job in order to perform to the best of my ability on the job. For example, I was tasked with working on an education challenge as part of a devolved North of Tyne deal from central government. I'd previously had no professional experience in education but I was able to produce work that would be sent to central government as part of proposals, to MPs for research purposes and to future employees as necessary background research. This experience has taught me that while there will undoubtedly be gaps in areas I don't yet know or have any previous experience, I can strive to learn and understand them.
Another important aspect to this role was working with elected members in an apolitical role. I worked closely with cabinet members especially the Deputy Leader. Carrying out my role in this manner has become second nature in this role, understanding that the elected members are there to represent the people and my role is to carry out the vision and demands of the people through them. Whilst at the same time understanding the administration may well change in five years time and the same is absolutely, and rightly, expected of me should that happen.
Overall this role has given me a wide breadth of experience with political and development work and project management experience.

Alongside this professional work has been several volunteering roles including as a refugee support worker for the British Red Cross as well as Social Isolation Officer for the same organisation. I have also volunteered as a Media Liaison Officer for six years with M.E Derbyshire, International Buddy at Derby University and Event Co-ordinator & Shelter Assistant with the RSPCA.
MA International Politics (Globalisation, Poverty & Development) Newcastle University
During this degree I researched and studied a wide range of subjects ranging from political systems, human rights, war theory, European politics and geopolitics. This culminated in a research dissertation looking at how international systems and structures are prepared for, or in some cases how they are already dealing with, climate change induced health crises. Specifically the potential spread of malaria in Africa due to increases in temperature and humidity. This mainly focused on the systemic contradiction between the need for long term thinking and solution around climate change and the short term funding and practices around health crises.

BSc Biological Sciences Derby University
My undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences has trained me to think in a critical and analytical manner which has lent itself to the development research for my current role. The two disciplines of science and international politics blended well together in my research on global health.
