Professional Experience:
In my military career, I have most enjoyed “remote” tasks, in African and Middle Eastern countries, often demanding independent action and thought in support of clearly defined aims.

I have developed a strong pedigree as a mentor and advisor, most recently at the strategic level but over the years right down to the tactical “one to one”. I have extensive experience of law enforcement and security, following operational service in conflict zones. I have also been involved in counter-terrorism and intelligence, on one occasion working in direct support of a National Police led task-force.

My current role sees me in in a joint police/military advisory team, with a strong focus on security, enforcement, justice and contering the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT). I am also well versed in capacity building, encouraging sound management and self-sustainability in organisations that are cash and resource strapped.

Over the years, I have learned how relationship building and networking can be real force-multipliers, and have used these attributes to great effect in my current role, and in previous positions.I have also developed a keen interest in conservation and alternative livelihoods work, not only in my full time role, but also as the lead volunteer for the protection of Freetown’s last forest (which happens to be adjacent to my work compound). Most recently, I secured international commitment from Sierra Leone and 3 other West African countries to counter the Illegal Wildlife Trade (IWT) through improved international cooperation on issues such as legislation, border security and training. This was achieved by researching, planning and delivering a regional CIWT workshop for key decision-makers and gaining political, diplomatic and ministerial support from luminaries including SL’s First Lady, drafting speeches for the latter as well as the UK High Commissioner. I believe this has exposed me to conservation generally, and to many of the issues surrounding law enforcement and security in protected areas and parks.

My work experience to date has seen me in direct command of organisations of up to 400 strong, with significant personal and financial responsibility (budgets and equipment). I have succeeded in these roles by applying sound leadership principles, and understanding the relationship between the task, the team and the individuals within it. On many occasions, I have been confronted by stressful situations, and have trusted my character, training and team-mates to see me through. I have been told that I have a calm, friendly but decisive nature which carries people with me. I have been required to implement change, either because policy demanded it, or because I judged it was required. In all cases, I have tried hard to sell the “what” and the “why’, before implementing the “how”, and I am proud of the successes I have been part of, often in the face of cultural and institutional opposition I am a well-grounded family ma
