Professional Experience:
Dr. Aponte's work for 15 years has focused primarily on climate change policy, natural resource management, and disaster risk management. His policy and research applications are aimed at strengthening capacities to spur climate action and achieve sustainable development goals, environmental and social justice.

Recent consulting project collaborations include: senior environmental policy consultant in preparation of the Port of San Diego Master Plan Update; senior consultant in preparation of the sea level rise vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategy for the Port of San Diego and; project manager supporting the creation of the Resilient Puerto Rico Advisory Commission.

Prior consulting projects have included works on integrated water resource management, urban and land use planning, sustainable development, spatial analysis and cartographic design, and environmental assessments for renewable energy projects.

As a researcher, his projects have focused on disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, water resource management and community development. Recent research collaborations include serving as author for the US Caribbean chapter on the 4th US National Climate Assessment, and a longitudinal research on household recovery efforts in post-disaster context, working alongside researchers at the University of Manchester.

Dr. Aponte has previously worked as Special Aide to the Minister of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico, serving as senior advisor to the Minister and interagency liaison on climate policy, water resource management, and community based sustainable development practices. During his tenure at the agency he also served as manager to a diverse portfolio of programs and projects.

He also served as a policy officer intern to the European Commission's Directorate General for Climate Action, supporting the preparation of the EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change.
Felix earned a PhD in Planning and Environmental Management from the University of Manchester (UK). His dissertation is called "Concerning Caribbean Climate Change Vulnerabilities and Adaptation in Small Island Cities".
He also earned a Masters degree in Urban and Territorial Planning, from the University of Puerto Rico (PR). His thesis was focused on a urban community development project in Santurce, Puerto Rico.
Felix also earned a BA in Geography from the University of Puerto Rico.
