Professional Experience: |
I have over 25 years of progressive professional experience, in development field, acquired working in several African countries. This includes 8 years at Regional and Continental Level with both United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and Land O’Lakes International Development, 3 years as Country Representative with USADF, 4 years as Chief of Party with Land O’Lakes (including two years as Country Director), 6 years as Chief Executive Officer of a National Non-Governmental Organization (Kenya Gatsby Trust-KGT), and 6 years as Managing Director of a consulting firm (Small Enterprise Development and Employment Creation Organization).
My work experience in Africa covers West, East and Southern Africa. My sectoral expertise is expansive in the agricultural, small & medium enterprises, impact investing and financial services sectors with working understanding of other sectors like water and sanitation, nutrition and health. I spent prolonged periods of time implementing programs in very challenging environments including Southern Sudan, Somaliland and Uganda where I was instrumental in setting up projects that support sustainable economic development and the rights of women and children.
In the areas of agricultural development, I have deep experience in production and marketing systems, value chains, grassroots participatory processes, institutional development and capacity building, investments and innovations that drive increased agricultural productivity and marketing. These experiences are especially relevant in addressing challenges facing women and children where income transforms women and children’s lives, education, health and provides for their protection.
I have extensive experience designing, developing and managing development strategies and programs in Africa. Working for USADF, I developed dozens of economic and social development programs. In this capacity I was directly engaged in the entire project cycle undertaking the solicitation of applications; technical evaluation of applications; selection of grantees; due diligence and pre-grant award assessments; developing the monitoring and performance metrics; supervising activity implementation including capacity development and training; performance and compliance monitoring; and results reporting.
Over the years, I have accumulated wealth of experience and expertise guiding the development of various country goals, targets and budgets and providing leadership to ensure high impact results. Working with Land O’Lakes International Development, I supervised program implementation within the Sub-Saharan Africa Region, specifically ensuring field-based donor-funded contracts and agreements meet or exceed results targets, and are implemented on-time, within budget and meet other key donor and stakeholder requirements.
