1999 - 2004: Worked for several local and international NGOs in Malawi to build their capacity in communication for rural development strategies.
2004 - 2007: Worked for USAID in Malawi to develop the sustainable rural livelihood development strategy, and its implementation through production and presentation of radio and television programs, and production of training videos.
2007 - 2009: Worked as Project Manager in a Regional Project covering Eastern DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda. The Project, 'Women in Post-Conflict Situations' majored in encouraging women to talk about the hardships they have been through during the regional conflicts, and share solutions to their problems. It also worked with authorities to ensure that women's rights are known and protected. The project produced radio programs, Television programs, newsletters, and lots of DVDs that were screened back in the communities within the countries and within the region.
2010 - to date: Program Manager for a Communication for Social Change Program focusing on working with Community Based Organizations in Sustainable livelihoods and food security, Education (including adult literacy using REFLECT approach and Catch-up), and HIV/AIDS prevention. Operating in two Provinces in Rwanda.
The Program puts emphasis on the need that for sustainable development to take place, communities need to be part and parcel of the planning and implementation, and monitoring processes of the project. A relevant communication strategy that in plan and practice prioritizes in engaging the communities to understand that outsiders can never bring development to a community, but rather, can only facilitate it, is the key. The Program endeavors to work with communities in a manner that differentiates a development activity from a relief one. This emphasis is important because many so-called 'development' projects are in actual fact 'relief' projects because they emphasize on material 'hand-outs'. In a 'development' project, you emphasize on visualizing what the community can be capable to achieve. Once this vision is clearly and firmly constructed, the communities will look for resources from all available sources to achieve their vision(s). This is not easy to implement because many other projects will be busy with service delivery. However, once few groups grasp the idea and move with it, their advancement towards sustainable development becomes much more noticeable than the groups who have been operating under service delivery.
