Professional Experience: |
I am a passionate and outspoken advocate for social justice and human rights. I'm a sociolinguist by training, specializing in French (I also speak Spanish and elementary Wolof), and my research is largely related to community identity and language learning. I've worked closely with the local Congolese refugee/asylum seeker community since arriving in Illinois in 2010, as a translator, simultaneous interpreter, and educator, and I am in the process of seeking DOJ accreditation as an immigrant advocate. Between my extracurricular and scholarly pursuits, I am familiar with the history and current political situation of the DRC and other parts of Francophone Africa (most specifically Senegal), and many of the issues facing Congolese people who have recently arrived in the US. My experience in quantitative and qualitative research would contribute to effective program planning, assessment, and communication.
