I am an accomplished Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Development professional with over 20 years’ experience in formulating, designing and managing Youth-Led Micro and Small Enterprise Development programmes in both Asia and Africa. I have worked with the Kenyan Government as a Senior Industrial Development Officer, served with the UN as an Adviser to the ministry of Development in Small and Medium Enterprise Development in East Timor and as a Livelihoods Development and Income Generation Adviser with an international NGO (The Christian Children’s Fund Inc) in Uganda. I have headed a Rural Enterprise Development programme while working with the Aga-Khan Foundation in the coast province of Kenya and have worked as an Enterprise Development Officer with the international NGO-Practical Action. I have had private sector experience, setting up an energy saving SME in Kampala and served as a director in a Social Enterprise Firm in Nairobi
My key specialty areas in MSME Development are in Facilitation of market access for rural and urban enterprises, supporting Business Development Services for Youth MSMEs, product development, promotion of appropriate processing and manufacturing technologies for SMEs, Development of market linkages schemes Entrepreneurship training and development, Value Chain analysis, Program Management, Project fund raising and general Enterprise Development. In June this year, I completed leading a successful Youth Employment initiative with the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Youth Employment and jobs Creation Experience:
While working with the International Labour Organization(IL0) as its National coordinator in Kenya, I have been in charge of a an eight million dollar Youth Entrepreneurship program that looked into engaging the youth to assist them to contribute to national and economic development while creating jobs for themselves and their peers. My understanding of the issues of Youth unemployment in sub-Sahara Africa is immense, having worked in this area for the last five years. I managed and delivered on six components under this including developing Business Support Services for Youth in Business, promoting enterprise culture , managing small youth- for- youth grants whose aim was to give the youth a voice in their development agenda, developing entrepreneurship curricula and developing evidence for youth employment advocacy .
Through this program, I have reached more than one (1) million youth with messaging on merits of Entrepreneurship and its ability to create decent jobs in Kenya, have Provided over 30 Grants for Youth groups mostly in innovative Green enterprises, have built the capacity of 300 Business Trainers for more than 90 institutions including 3 Government Ministries (Labour, industrialization and Youth Affairs), a Leading Bank and two foundations (Kenya Commercial Bank and Equity Group Foundations).
