Professional Experience:
I have 18 years of experience working in resource economics and rural development mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. I have acquired much expertise both academically and through interaction with rural households, public and private sectors. I have excellent expertise in program management that I have acquired through training and the organizations I have worked with in rural areas. I also have outstanding expertise in conducting research both for academic and policy influencing dialogue at a national and international level that contribute to rural transformation. For example, I have been hired as a consultant by the World Bank and the African Development Bank to develop appreciate policies strategies that can be used to make input subsidy programs a success in Africa, using Malawi as a case study. I have published my research findings in top journals like American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, Climate Change, and Development Studies. I have also published policy briefs on several issues, like soil fertility management, the fertilizer subsidy program in Malawi and maize variety adoption and given presentations on such matters at policy level both national and regional level to policy makers, donors, and the private sector.
Currently, I am working for the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) as a Socio-economist based in the Southern Africa Region Office, Harare, Zimbabwe. I am responsible for Southern Africa countries that include Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, and Lesotho and Swaziland. My work involves close collaboration with national Government staff on policy dialogue and also directly with smallholder farmers. In CIMMYT, I am responsible for conducting socioeconomic studies in maize based farming systems to assess the adoption and impact of the improved varieties. I have also been responsible for managing some projects that demanded collaboration between the private and public sectors. I have also spearheaded the transformation of data collection methods in CIMMYT from the paper-based questionnaire to Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) platforms (SurveyBe, ODK, Survey Solutions) and further to mobile data collection and monitoring. Regarding data analysis, I have excellent skill in econometrics using cross-section and panel data. I have excellent expertise in conducting impact assessment with advanced econometric methods. With these skills, I have been responsible for training and building capacity for M&E staff in the region national partners and also CIMMYT staff.
Previously, I worked for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) as a Researcher in Climate Change Economics based in London, United Kingdom. At IIED I was responsible for developing economic policies that could help LDCs mitigate and adapt to climate change. • Certificate in Project Management for Development Professionals
o In this training, I learned how to manage programs at different levels. This was a training tailor-made for senior managers. This included financial, human resource, time and resources management. I was also trained on advanced monitoring and evaluation of programs using different technics.
• Certificate in Advanced Methods in Impact Assessment
o This was a refresher course on the advanced methods in impact assessment. I had learned and used them during my doctoral studies, and this training refreshed my skills and added newly developed technics.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:
? Doctor of Philosophiae (Ph.D.) Development and Resource Economics. (2010) Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Aas, Norway.
o Thesis title: Land rental markets, investment, and productivity under customary land tenure systems in Malawi.
o This study involved collecting household data in Malawi from 450 households in 2006 and 2007. The data was analyzed using advanced econometric technics. Four papers were developed from this study and included an analysis of household’s participation in land rental markets in Malawi given the duo customary land tenure system in Malawi. The second was in the short-term investments (organic and inorganic fertilizers) in agricultural production. The third one was on how the customary land tenure affects long-term investments (tree and soil and water conservation structures) in agricultural production. The last paper was on how the customary tenure security affects agricultural productivity given the different investments options available. Two papers from the thesis have since been published one as a book chapter and the another as a journal paper in Agricultural Economics

o I was trained in environmental management and pollution control. I conducted my research on the reclaimed land from the materials dug from the sea bed during the construction of the channel tunnel between Dover in England and Calais in France.The objective of the study was to evaluate the impact of the salty water on vegetation growth on the three hectares reclaimed land.

o My option major was Agricultural engineering. I was also trained in crop science, livestock management that includes aquaculture, human nutrition and family science and rural development and agricultural extension.
