Professional Experience:
I work internationally as a consultant in the fields of HIV, public health and communication with governments, development agencies, donors and NGOs. The focus of support includes includes development of health policies and strategies, research and evaluation of health communication interventions, health communication program design, community and social mobilization. My research work includes a focus on prevention of gender-based violence; gender and HIV; HIV prevention; Addressing HIV among vulnerable groups, key populations and the needs and responses of people living with HIV. My clients have included various United Nations Agencies, National Departments of Health, National AIDS Councils, International Organisations, and National non-governmental organisations. I conduct evaluations of programs related to HIV, gender, health and social mobilization and am involved in theoretical, policy and strategic reviews and evaluations related to HIV and other health issues globally. I have served as a lead and co-researcher on various socio-behavioural and epidemiological surveys as well as conducting extensive qualitative research. I have a strong interest in participatory approaches to improving health and have developed a methodology called Action Media that brings community perspectives into health communication. Action Media has been applied in many countries to inform understanding of the needs of marginalized communities, contributing to multi-level and multi-country communication processes and campaigns. I've also developed and managed various development communication and HIV interventions including leading South Africa's Beyond Awareness Campaign and the conceptualization, production and evaluation of the award winning AIDS focused prime-time youth drama series, Tsha Tsha. I co-founded the Centre for AIDS Development, Research and Evaluation (CADRE) in South Africa in 2000, and served as Executive Director until early 2009. My post-graduate studies have focused on social perspectives on HIV/AIDS. My specialities are health communication policy, strategy and program design; Participatory Action Media; Qualitative research; Evaluation; and, Community mobilization.
Education:
I hold a PhD in Cultural and Media studies with a focus on HIV and program and research integrity and accountability, including analysis of the political and ideological dimensions of HIV policy and strategy. My Master's degree formed the basis for the Action Media Methodology – a participatory approach to the design of health communication that has been used in Africa to inform health communication strategy and programs. I also hold an honors degree in Cultural and media studies, a diploma in Adult Education and a bachelors degree in Journalism and Media Studies.
