Professional Experience:
Dr. Apambire is the Director of the Center for International Water and Sustainability at the Desert Research Institute where he leads the institute’s international water, development and global sustainability issues. He is a hydrogeologist and an expert in international Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), environmental issues and development matters with extensive NGO, field, academic, teaching, grant making and management experience. He is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Natural Resources & Environment Science and Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he teaches international WASH and environmental courses and advises graduate students. Dr. Apambire’s research areas include Hydrology, Climate Change, International work, Water quality and Health, Geochemistry and Water resources in developing countries. He has experience in the management of NGOs and a deep understanding of the importance of integrating WASH programming into other development sectors such as health, agriculture, climate change, education, environment, gender, micro-finance and advocacy, as well as the importance of strong partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability.

Prior to returning to DRI, Dr. Apambire served as a Senior Advisor at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, where he managed the Foundation’s WASH grant portfolio and represented the Foundation to the broader WASH sector. He was also previously the Director of the WASH Sector at World Vision US and the Global Center where he led the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of global WASH strategies and large-scale integrated sustainable programs. Before then, he was an assistant research professor at DRI, where he conducted research on international and Southern Nevada water issues and taught numerous classes on WASH at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and other universities. Dr. Apambire also received the UNR Program of Hydrologic Sciences “Outstanding Faculty Award” 2000-2001 and founded the Students Association for International Water Issues at UNR.

Early in his career, Dr. Apambire worked with the World Vision Ghana Rural Water Project as a hydrogeologist where he managed field staff and was involved in the siting, design and construction of over 500 water supply and sanitation systems in about 400 remote and guinea endemic communities and institutions in Ghana. Dr. Apambire received his B.S. from the University of Ghana; M.S. from Carleton University, Canada; and his Ph.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno.
