I have been working in education in various capacities for over twenty years, primarily in the global educational industry. I spent seven years as an English language teacher in Japan, followed by thirteen years in publishing in sales, marketing, marketing research, business development and teacher development. Much of this time was spent in Asia, but for the last five years I have been working for for Cengage Learning’s ELT imprint, National Geographic Learning based in Boston, Massachusetts.
I have significant experience in the field of education, and have been closely involved in a number of projects involving partnerships between National Geographic Learning and entities such as public education authorities, supranational bodies, NGOs, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. Many of these projects have been in developing countries, most significantly in Vietnam, where I was the project lead on a major teacher development project for over 5,000 English language teachers with the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in Hanoi, and the South East Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) in Ho Chi Minh City.
I have also had the privilege to work with the US State Department on unique teacher development programs in Iran and Iraq, with World Learning, a Washington D.C. based NGO on a program for Madrassa Schools in India, with the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia on a major teacher development program, with the Slovakian National Institute of Education on a European Union funded training program, and with bi-national centers in Central America on donor-funded regional development projects.
Working alongside these organizations has made me realize that my passion for education stretches much further than the aims and objectives of a traditional commercial enterprise, and is geographically broader than the markets and territories which typically offer the most potential for commercial success. I believe that education – of all kinds – has a unique power to transform and improve the lives of people everywhere regardless of their ability to pay, and I would like to use the rest of my career to further that goal.
