Professional Experience:
Over 15 years experience in multi-country research, program design and management Exceptional intercultural skills. Designed and executed five international research projects. Strong supervisory experience of researchers and field staff.

Particular expertise in designing and executing trainings including training-of-trainers.

Teaching experience in European, American and Canadian universities with exceptional peer and student reviews.

Frontline work with a torture treatment center and refugee shelters. Worked with Amnesty International USA and Amnesty International from 2000-2009. Human rights and media consultant for: The UN Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Institute for International Education, MOSAIC, Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Americas Media Initiative, Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, Canadian Romani Alliance.

Over 20 years of journalism experience including Human Rights Editor for Praxis Center.
Interdisciplinary training in sociology, international relations and communications focusing on the intersections of media and human rights/social justice. Designed and executed five international research projects publishing in peer reviewed journals (Racial and Ethnic Studies, International Journal for Human Rights, Journalism Practice) as well as book chapters, policy and journalistic forums. Work focuses on self-representation of transnational peoples including Roma, Saami and migrants/refugees. PhD from the University of British Columbia, MA from the University of Chicago and BA from Antioch College. Awarded funding from the Canadian Social Science and Humanities Council and Fulbright Scholarship. Visiting Fellow at Columbia University and Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Law and Human Security at Simon Fraser University.
Affiliations and Achievements:
Shayna Plaut is interested in how people represent themselves in their own media, with a particular interest in peoples who do not fit neatly within the traditional notions of the nation-state. As a Fulbright and Vanier scholar, she has lived and worked in Hungary and the Balkans. She served as the Simons Research Fellow from 2015–2016 at Simon Fraser University. She is currently teaching courses on migration as well as social inequalities at the University of British Columbia and is the co-investigator for a CMRC-funded research project critically examining the use of “fixers” in international journalism.
