Area of Expertise:
  • Director, CEO, COP, President
Professional Experience:
I have 24 years of experience in the development field, of which 13 years with UNICEF.
Through the years I have worked at various levels, at the community level in an HIV continuum of care program (Dandora, Kenya) at state working regional health authorities on PHC infrastructure and capacity building support in the regional hospital in support to the regional health authorities (Jijiga, Dire Dawa in Region 5, Ethiopia) and at country level in Somalia as the head of mission for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). My interactions in those various contexts have been with NGO’s, community based organizations, governments and other UN agencies.
I have represented UNICEF at various forums in different countries, be it workshops, international meetings or national policy meetings.
As a senior program manager for UNICEF in India or as a field coordinator for Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), I understand the need for an effective participatory planning and development of complex programs, as are polio eradication, refugee programs or managing a field office for MSF. I have contributed substantially to the development of various Annual Work Plans, Country Program Action Plans, Rolling Work Plans, within UNICEF, and again in various other country offices. Planned and developed programs and went through various country program developments in various situations (stable & emergencies)
While working for the NGO MSF I was in charge of 2 field offices one in Ethiopia and one office in Somalia Kismayo. I was in charge of planning and implementation. In both I covered all health and nutrition related activities. This included more specifically work areas relevant to the situation in Haiti like management of Cholera outbreaks and the management over various types of feeding programs be it in Kenya in the Somali refugee camp of Hagadera managing a blanket dry ration and wet feeding program. Or in Kismayo, Somalia where the therapeutic feeding program within the MSF managed Hospital was one of the only ones available for miles, despite high rates of under nutrition.
In various countries I was supervising teams composed out of international and national colleagues. From my working experience, effective coordination and teamwork are the only way to succeed. Be it through partnerships with NGO’s in absence of a Government as in Somalia, working with private public partnerships as the Polio eradication program or with national and state governments.
In the last 5 postings, India, Nigeria, DRC, Haiti and Somalia, I have been able to contribute significantly in the monitoring and evaluation of the programs I was in charge off, this in close collaboration with the related sections.
In India for example we started using block and district profiles to be able to monitor the progress of the polio program based on key indicators. These were th
