Doctor of Philosophy, Cinema & Media Studies December 2017 (expected) University of Southern California Emphasis: Africa and New Media Dissertation: “The Rising Generation: Agency and Identity in Online African Hip Hop Culture” This dissertation examines online African hip hop culture to determine how the social, economic and political transformations in Sub-Saharan Africa since the 1990s known as “Africa Rising” have altered what it means to be African. • Designed and executed a comparative mixed-methods study using participant observation, semi-structured interviews, textual analysis, survey data and statistical analysis in compliance and approval with all university IRB standards • Conducted qualitative field research over 4 months while residing in South Africa and 2 weeks while visiting Holland • Created detailed databases using Microsoft Excel to systematically catalogue and analyze case study sites and interview data Presented findings in both formal and informal settings to a mixture of student, professional and academic audiences
