Professional Experience: |
I have 31 years of experience in human rights work, including 14 as a senior manager, as well as extensive experience in political and diplomatic engagement, policy development and organisational leadership.
As a senior manager I have led for eight years the country strategy division of Amnesty International (AI) comprising up to 200 staff, including five regional directors and a crisis response team, with offices in multiple locations. As AI's interim Secretary General in 2010, I introduced management changes in a number of areas while dealing with the day-to-day challenges of leading the organization in a period of leadership transition. I am currently a senior manager at the UN Support Mission in Libya, based in Tunis.
I have led multiple processes of complex planning and resource allocation. I have promoted collaborative working methods and effective communications within organisations, leading several multidisciplinary project teams, working often under great pressure. I have motivated and supported managers and other staff with diverse professional and cultural backgrounds. In addition to seeking the development of key internal expertise, I have sought to ensure close cooperation with national and international partner organizations working in similar fields.
My political and diplomatic engagement has included discussions with heads of state, prime ministers and other ministers as well as police, military and judicial officials; international and regional organizations such as the AU, EU, NATO and the OSCE; civil society; commanders of armed groups; and donor countries and institutions. Engaging with these interlocutors I have implemented rule of law assistance and justice reform programmes, for example in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Libya; ensured support to national human rights institutions and civil society organisations; and mediated in conflicts between communities.
I have extensive experience of researching, drafting as well as supervising and editing reports. I have a long record of public speaking and media work, specifically as spokesperson on complex or sensitive issues. I have sought to ensure objectivity, accuracy, clarity and nuance where needed. I operate in English and French as well as Arabic and Italian.
I have extensive experience of policy work in many thematic areas. I have promoted attention to gender issues and women participation in all my positions. As head of policy for Amnesty International and in other capacities I have led the development of policies, in consultations with other expert organizations and individuals, on issues including the responsibility to protect and the use of force, international and transitional justice and interpretation of international law.
I am seeking further assignments in the political, humanitarian or human rights area, preferably in Europe or the Middle East and North Africa.
