Professional Experience:
Since July 2008, Dr. LI has been directing the Global Freshwater Programme of WWF - the world's leading conservation network that works actively on freshwater conservation in many of the world’s large rivers including Amazon, Rio Grande and Rio Conchos, Amur, Yangtze, Mekong, Ganges, Indus, Danube, Balkan rivers, and Zambezi. Under his leadership and coordination, WWF developed its Freshwater Programme Strategy, established key delivery mechanisms and Expert Teams on water security and stewardship, and has become a global key player in the water community.
He is also a Board Member of Delta Alliance, an international knowledge-driven network organization with the mission of improving the resilience of the world’s deltas.
During 2006-2008, he was one of the leading persons to develop China National IRBM Strategy, Yangtze Conservation and Development Report 2007 and 2009, and Yangtze Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment Report.
During 2004-2007, he proposed and co-led, as the Vice Secretary General, the organization of the 1st and 2nd Yangtze Forum in 2005 and 2007 – a high level platform participated by 5 ministries, 11 provincial governments, scientists, and leaders from the corporate and NGOs. The Forum fully adopted the IRBM (integrated river basin management) concept in its Yangtze Declaration, and committed to implement it for a healthy Yangtze.
During 2003-2004, he was the coordinator of the Task Force on Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM), China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED). Through CCICED, the Task Force submitted the Policy Recommendations on Promoting IRBM to Restore Living Rivers in China to the State Council in October 2004 – the first report promoting IRBM in China. Afterwards, many of the recommendations of this report have been accepted by the Chinese government and some of them have been implemented, e.g. using IRBM as the framework for revising of the river basin management plans.
During 1998 to 2004, he supported CCICED - the highest international policy think-tank of Chinese government with different capacities as Assistant for Working Group of Sustainable Agriculture, member of Chinese Leading Expert Group, and Coordinator of IRBM Task Force.
Dr. LI did his post-doctoral research on China’s ecological footprint in Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) during 2001-2002, and received his PhD degree on geography from CAS in 2000.
Education:
Attained PhD degree of Physical Geography from Chinese Academy of Sciences in December 2000.
