Area of Expertise:
  • Social, Education, Gender, Youth, Child
Professional Experience:
I have taught English and communications for over 30 years in six different countries to students ranging from 5 to 75. I had at least 10 years' experience in the UK in comprehensive schools and later in adult education. I have also run a peer tutoring project at IMperial College London called the Pimlico Connection which sent students into local primary and secondary schools to promote science and maths especially among ethnic minorities and girls. My task was to run the scheme, train monitor and evaluate it and write the annual report. I have also taught the presentation of technical education and presentation skills generally to students at Imperial. In my capacity as a freelance writer, I taught creative and review writing at the City Literary Institute and between 1992 - 6 was associate lecturer in the Theatre Studies department of Goldsmiths UNiversity where I designed and delivered the MA in contemporary theatre studies. Everywhere I have taught I have been able to offer INSET training to fellow teachers, notably in Kenya where I specialised in the use of film to enhance writing among students. In Africa I have been particularly involved in the teaching of girls - in Zambia participating in the UNICEF Program for the Advancement of Girls' Education (PAGE) which carried out very useful studies in the advantages of girls-only classes. Here we dealt specifically with issues of sexual harassment in an environment where girls had no other outlet for their complaints. I have written papers on my experiences and presented them at various conferences, most recently the World Innovation Summit in Education (Doha 2009 and 2010.) Outside the classroom in Zambia and Kenya I organised drama and dance groups for underprivileged youth as well as helping to train the Pamoja Dance Group for disabled dancers. All these initiatives have been written about in articles for the press whereever it has been feasible (please see www.bettinka-caplanbetty.blogspot.com) The object has always been to promote the students' work and to help give them a public profile in countries where no money exists for funding the arts.
Education:
I have a degree in English Language and Literature plus two post graduate diplomas in education - one of them a higher diploma from Goldsmiths University. I also have a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment from Swinburne University, Melbourne. I am about to complete the CELTA course at International House London. I have done a great deal of informal study outside university, at London University as well as professional associations such as LATE and NATE (National Association for the Teaching of English, London.) I recently completed the CELTA course at International House London. I have done a lot of INSET training - both as teacher and learner.
Affiliations and Achievements:
I am also a trained dancer having studied at the London Contemporary School of Dance for several years. Thus I have been able to introduce dance in a lot of my work wherever it has been appropriate. I have published many articles in newspapers and magazines in the UK and USA as well as in Africa. I have presented papers at conferences in the UK and Australia and most recently in Kenya (Re-Membering Kenya - a collection of presentations at the Goethe Institute following the post-election violence in 2008 - published 2010.)
