I have had the opportunity to gain experience in the field of international relations and international education in Europe, Canada, and the United States. In acclimatizing myself to new curricula, administrative policies and duties, I have had to be a receptive, flexible, and innovative professional —all the while remaining true to who I am as a teacher as well as an administrator, someone who models enthusiasm for and dedication to learning, improvement, and dialogue.
My pedagogical training began at the University of Mirail in Toulouse, France where I benefited from the tutelage of some of the foremost researchers in the field of teaching French as a Second Language and, then, continued developing my teaching skills by taking the CELTA course for teachers of English offered by the Cambridge University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In my class, I ensure that information is accessible and relevant to my pupils by carefully planning lessons, by employing a wide range of learning strategies to raise the attainment level of all the students, and by immersing my students in a rich and supportive learning environment that encourages them all to reach their personal and academic potential.
During my work at the Dickinson Study Center in Toulouse, I learned what it takes to be an administrator. I worked collaboratively with colleagues on a study abroad program fostering a cultural exchange between the University of Mirail in Toulouse and Dickinson College in the United States. The program fostered new initiatives and objectives to ensure a successful cooperation between two different educational systems with a particular emphasis on the development of the students’ linguistic, communicative, and cultural skills.
My doctoral thesis project is cross-disciplinary -- it focuses on the cultural practice of various healing traditions among the Mexican American community living and working in the United States. It is intended to bring together my interests in international relations, literature, culture and pedagogy. I am particularly interested in the way non-traditional approaches to learning and knowing can be integrated into the Western educational systems.
