Professional Experience:
I am currently acting head (normally deputy head) of humanitarian policy and campaigns at the UK head office of leading international relief, development and campaigning organisation Oxfam.

I brief or lobby policy makers, aid officials, and politicians, give media briefings and interviews, help design and deliver campaigns, provide policy guidance to colleagues worldwide, author advocacy documents, and advocate on a range of humanitarian and related development and human rights issues.

Recently, I have worked on emergencies in Syria, Yemen and Nepal. I lead Oxfam's global policy/advocacy work on the Women, Peace & Security agenda. I line manage 4-5 other humanitarian advocacy/policy staff, and manage the team budget. I sometimes act as the humanitarian policy lead in major crises.

I have particular experience of Asia and the Middle East. I sometimes travel overseas to provide extra support or leadership, such as in Pakistan, Lebanon and the Philippines in 2013, and Afghanistan, Pakistan in 2014. I also attend in international events and meetings to achieve advocacy aims.

Thematically, I work on a range of humanitarian and related human rights and development issues. These include civilian protection, humanitarian access, coordination, donor funding, and gender. I also work on longer term or structural issues such as conflict resolution, security sector reform, and women’s rights.

Previously, I was a humanitarian policy advisor in Oxfam's UK head office team for 3.5 years. Before that, I was Oxfam GB's humanitarian policy advisor for South Asia. Based in Nepal, I conducted missions to Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan. I also went on emergency missions to Lebanon (Israel-Hizbullah conflict 2006) and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (Israel-Gaza conflict 2008-09).

Before my career change in late 2005, I was a journalist for nine years in print, online and broadcast media, mainly in the Middle East. Covering issues from lifestyle to politics, I progressed to senior editorial and reporting roles, including at Aljazeera International (whose English website I helped launch in 2003).

A UK citizen educated to masters degree level, I speak fluent English and intermediate Urdu and Arabic. I have a keen interest in politics, international relations, human rights, and environmental issues.
