Professional Experience:
I have lectured at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. While at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, I taught in the area of International Relations and Global Politics, Political Theory, Conflict Resolution and Issues and Themes in Peace Studies. These teaching and research areas exposed me to interdisciplinary issues in local, regional and global contexts. Specifically, the modules on International Relations and Global Politics explored the foreign policies of superpowers and great powers, including those of China, Great Britain, Russia and the United States, as well as those of emerging economies namely Brazil, India and South Africa. My commitments included developing and augmenting syllabi as well as supplementary (that is, tutorial) materials for modules in International Relations and Global Politics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. At the undergraduate level, curriculum delivery consisted largely of lectures, classroom simulations, video presentations and tutorials while seminars constituted the primary mode of instruction at the graduate level.
My academic commitments at the University of KwaZulu-Natal included working with colleagues to develop and strengthen the graduate programmes in International Relations and Global Politics. I was part of a team that designed new modules and teaching strategies in both programmes. As a member of an interdepartmental research grouping, I organised seminars and research capacity-building workshops for graduate students. The aim of these interventions was to hone students’ research and presentation skills. I also undertook tasks in administration and community engagement, representing the Department at Open Days and taking students to outreach programmes designed to foster community service and their understanding of public policy.
Prior to joining the academic team at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, I worked as a research assistant with the Africa Strategy Group International, one of Africa’s leading communication firms based in Johannesburg, South Africa. My focus was on Crisis Management and Reputation-Political Risk tracking-reporting (Political situation analysis for investment in the Central African Sub-Region and Comparative Analysis on South Africa’s position on the Madagascan crisis). In 2009, I had a year of internship with Amnesty International USA and worked closely with the Individual-At-Risk Supervisor for Africa as my Curriculum Vitae (CV) attests. These aspects of my professional profile highlight my experience working with international and non-governmental organizations.
As a former refugee and a beneficiary of an international resettlement program, I have firsthand knowledge of the policies, procedures and logistics that pertain to the functions of a humanitarian organization. I have demonstrated monitoring and evaluation skills as head of the Ebenezer Akwanga Human Rights and Humanitarian Institute (EAHRHI) based in Maryland, United States. At EAHRHI, I lead a
