Professional Experience: |
My career in public service began with 2 years in the U.S. Peace Corps in Thailand, where I worked in the Royal Thai Government's malaria control program along the Burmese border. Since then (1980s) I've combined academic training in public policy and the biological sciences with nonprofit management positions in the health safety net (a free clinic), in HIV/AIDS services, in refugee resettlement, and in prisoner reentry.
Notable contributions and experience include the following: * Led a prisoner reentry nonprofit for two years during staff leadership transition. Stabilized funding in a challenging environment and dramatically improved program outcomes. Mentored the now-current executive director. * Grew budgets substantially in a free clinic and an AIDS service organization. * Led turnaround in free clinic, doubling staff, adding medical volunteers, improving quality of care, and earning full accreditation. * Won $2M in grants to build two 8-bed homes for persons with AIDS. * Advocated in state legislature for people with HIV, the mentally ill, the uninsured, and prisoners re-entering society. * Earned clean audits each year in Executive Director positions.
I have been an engaged volunteer for many years, especially for the United Way and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (between 1994-2003, when I was earning my doctorate and was a stay-at-home parent for my three daughters). Have also been active in helping refugees who have resettled from Burma to the Richmond area.
Specialties: Refugee Resettlement, Strategic Planning, Nonprofit Financial Management, Public Policy Advocacy, Fundraising, Press & Public Relations, Human Resources, Public Health, Board Governance, Program Development, Budgeting, Grantsmanship, Health Care Safety Net, Health Policy
