- Most recent job (2008-2011): Regional Project Coordinator for the UNDP/GEF Project on Lake Tanganyika at the Lake Tanganyika Authority, a UNOPS managed Project based in Bujumbura, Burundi: Position held: P5 step 8.
• Responsible for the regional environmental protection of the Lake Tanganyika through implementation of the Environmental Strategic Action Programme for the Lake in the 4 riparian countries, namely Burundi, DRC, Tanzania and Zambia.
• Main focus of regionally and nationally coordinated activities is to fight against the lake Tanganyika sedimentation through reforestation in the lake’s basin and awareness raising of local populations, as well as fight against lacustrine water pollution at urban centers situated on the lake shores through construction of efficient wastewater collection networks and the development of a low cost regional integrated environmental monitoring programme of the lake’s biodiversity and natural resources to ensure normal flow of the lacustrine ecosystem services.
- Regional Technical Coordinator for Biodiversity & Species at the Eastern Africa Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya, of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (2004 – 2008):
• Responsible for development and implementation of projects to further Biodiversity and Species conservation and implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity and other Multilateral Environment Agreements in relation to sustainable use of natural resources in and outside the protected area system.
• An important focus was biodiversity conservation in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia) with particular attention to conservation of remaining forests and efficient collaboration with pastoralists and national authorities.
- Regional Coordinator of the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) (2000-2001)
• With Regional Office in Kampala, Uganda, my overall mission was to conduct Conservation/Development actions for populations adjacent to ecosystems rich in biodiversity such as afromontane forests and protected areas in the 6 countries of the Albertine Rift region: Burundi, DR Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
• An important part of the activity progamme was raising awareness of local populations on relevance of sustainable use of biodiversity resources to better and durably sustain their livelihood.
- Director General of the National Institute for Environment and Nature Conservation (1991-1993)
• As Director General of the “Institut National pour l’Environnement et la Conservation de la Nature”, INECN, in Burundi, I had the mission of managing all country’s protected areas and their biodiversity resources, monitoring of the national environment general status, promoting environmental education and handling all issues relating to the implementation of the Rio-Conventions (CBD, UNFCCC and UNCCD) with main focus on the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD).
