Professional Experience: |
My professional experience covers the fields of anti-corruption, governance, sustainable development and strategic planning and organisational development. I have held senior management positions in intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations. As the Executive Director of Transparency International (TI) UK (London) from 2004 to 2012, I oversaw the expansion of the organisation’s work in several areas, including research on corruption in the UK, reform of UK anti-bribery law, strengthening anti-money laundering regulations and raising ethical standards in the private sector. I co-edited and contributed to several TI publications, including The 2010 UK Bribery Act Adequate Procedures (2010); Corruption in the UK: Overview (2011); Corruption in UK Politics (2012); and Fixing the Revolving Door Between Government and Business (2012). I wrote or spoke on corruption issues in several news media, including the BBC, CNN, Al Jazeera, Foreign Policy, Huffington Post and the Guardian. I served in various capacities in the intergovernmental Commonwealth Secretariat, London, during the period 1985 to 2004. I led the organisation’s sustainable development programme focused on climate change, the special concerns and needs of small states and the integration of economic and environmental policies in member countries. I co-ordinated a Commonwealth Expert Group on Corruption helping to develop proposals that were endorsed by Commonwealth governments. As Deputy Director for Strategic Planning and Chair of the Planning Task Force, I helped to develop two strategic plans for the Commonwealth Secretariat and improve its planning and governance mechanisms. Before joining the Commonwealth, I was a consultant at the United Nations Department for Disarmament Affairs and UNICEF in New York. After moving to Boston from London in 2012, I became a Fellow (2013-14) at the Edmond J Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University, where my research on corruption in political party funding was published as a Working Paper of the Center (‘Tackling Corruption in Political Party Financing’).
