Area of Expertise:
  • Environment, Climate, Energy, Water, Sanitation
  • Government, Governance, Reforms
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, Policy, Research, Analysis
Professional Experience:
Currently, I work for the Valparaíso Regional Comptroller’s Office of the Republic of Chile leading an array of environmental audits, which includes researching fishing permits, copper exports and air emission standards among many other environmental issues. Previously, I worked in the Central Government Comptroller’s Office of the Republic of Chile analysing, at a national level, the legal, technical and accounting aspects of various environmental policies, such as forestry grants, conservation programmes and environmental impact assessments, among others.
My experience in this organization has enabled me to gain experience in legal applications and accounting, as well as to develop team work and leadership skills through interacting with many public and private agents. Additionally, through conducting these audits, I have acquired an understanding of the current loopholes in environmental laws, policies and programs which result in weak outcomes and the consequential degradation of the environment. My reports have appeared in the media and they have contributed to improving environmental policies and programs.
Last year I was awarded a scholarship by the Indian Government to undertake a one-month training on performance audits of social sector schemes. This opportunity enabled me to share experiences with auditors from 28 different countries and obtain a very deep understanding of the scope of the performance audits in various practical and cultural contexts, focused on policy efficiency, economy and effectiveness. On my return, I developed a training package to deliver the knowledge acquired to my colleagues.
Preceding this, I worked in two Chilean Universities as a lecturer’s assistant, where I carried out research on forestry and land use planning. While there, I was awarded a US$12,000 grant for a land use planning project, which aided in preserving the last Chilean palm forest of the Valparaíso region, located in a low-income housing area.
I also have work experience overseas, which has allowed me to have a broad understanding of environmental issues in a developed country, especially regarding energy use reduction and climate change. For example, I served as an intern with the Ministry of Economic Development of New Zealand, where I analysed the potential of biomass as a renewable resource, which informed the New Zealand Energy Strategy 2050. I learned a different viewpoint when I worked for WWF Wellington, where I researched potential electricity policies for New Zealand.
