Professional Experience:
During my master's studies in Beijing, I began my first professional experience in the field of journalism and communications at one of China's largest English language newspapers as an intern. I not only developed essential communication skills in the vein of research, writing and editing, but also gained direct insight into how a state-run news organization functions. Upon completion of my internship, I continue to author op-ed pieces and news analysis on a freelance basis for the paper.

Upon completion of my master's degree, I was selected by the Indonesian government to spend one year at Yogyakarta State University studying advanced level Indonesian language and conduct research on a topic relevant to public policy. I chose to focus my research on the local government's public policy measures as they pertain to the sex workers' access to health care, legal advocacy and vocational training for acquiring alternative sources of income. I successfully completed my research and presented my findings and policy recommendations to a university board of academics and local leaders of civil societal organizations.

I returned to Beijing to pursue a year of Chinese language study thereafter. I completed my language studies and was offered a three-month contract as an editor for Vientiane Times in the Lao PDR. During this period, I was responsible for daily editing of articles written by Lao reporters in addition to arranging and editing the print copy of the paper. I also conducted peer-to-peer staff training on improving English language and journalism skills.

After my contract with Vientiane Times expired, I moved back to Philadelphia to work with a friend's startup copywriting and editing company. The position with the company keeps my content production, editing and translation skills well-honed while I look for a full-time position to which I can apply both my knowledge of international development issues together with my skills in the field of communication.
Education:
I hold a bachelor's degree in development studies and international relations from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. Wanting to dive more in depth into issues facing developing countries in the realm of social and environmental issues, I obtained a full scholarship and living stipend to pursue a master's of management in social policy from Beijing Normal University. My program was one of a series of master's programs founded and designed by the former dean of the school of public policy at NYU, who saw a need for educating students on policy issues in developing countries within the context of such countries themselves. My master's thesis research pertained to the labor law and policy of the Chinese government and how it affects Chinese workers in foreign-owned corporations.

The following year, I was awarded a scholarship from the Indonesian government to study Indonesian language and pursue a research project of my choosing at Yogyakarta State University. My research focused on the local government's social policies toward sex workers. Upon the completion of my year in Indonesia, I returned to Beijing Normal University on scholarship again to build on my Chinese language skills I had acquired during my previous two years study there.
