At Bankers Trust, I worked on the Bank’s expansion of its Chilean Pension Administration businesses into Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela, which required a clear understanding of capital markets and financial instruments in those markets.
As Country Manager for Republic Bank in Cuba for 12 years from 2002, I built the bank’s business from start-up, including the recruitment and training of a team of 25 executives, providing trade, credit and cash management services to foreign exporters to Cuba.. Delivered USD 140m in operating profit to the bank, as well as some USD 60M in interest income to investors, over 12 years. .
At CDC Capital Partners, I executed cross-border investments in emerging markets, including the privatisation of a cement plant in Jamaica; the expansion of a tea factory in Kenya; the acquisition and modernisation of soft drink bottling plants in Tanzania and Rwanda; the expansion of a petrochemical plant in Thailand, as well as the rehabilitation of a mining project in Uganda.
I set up CDC’s country office in Cuba, reviewing many project financing and private equity opportunities. One investment in tourism was made, along with the establishment with a Cuban partner of a JV Finance company, Carifin, which was 60% owned and managed by CDC. Initially, Mr White participated on the Board, as CDC's Lead Director for credit matters, focusing particularly on risk mitigation strategies as well as the development of credit analysis and other operational risk management tools, but soon thereafter was promoted to CEO.
In 2014, I advised the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Grenada on a strategic framework for inbound foreign investment. I developed the strategic framework for CDC to invest in frontier countries in Africa and Asia, including in Myanmar. I led a project in Ethiopia, to invest in the first foreign owned financial institution.
