I am an applied plant breeder with expertise in hybrid rice and sorghum, with 35 years of experience, including 16 in East Africa, the balance in the US, in both the public and private sectors. the last 22 years have be focused on hybrid rice in N and S America, Africa and Asia, with specialization in commercial applications and product delivery. I have consulting experience in 25+ countries.

Professional Experience:

I have worked in both the private and public sectors in Asia, Africa and the Americas. I currently own and operate a hybrid rice breeding company in Kenya, which has a fee for service contract with a European seed company. Our parent lines are used in S and SE Asia. I have 21 years of commercial experience, and some 15 yeas in public sector breeding, teaching and research.

As research director of RiceTec, Inc in Alvin Texas i led the team which produced the first commercial rice hybrids in the Americas. my Team of Kenyan scientists at BBSL has produced 2-line female lines which will be commercialized withing 7 years in S and SE Asia.

Education:

A Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from Texas A&M Univ. in sorghum breeding with Dr. Fred Miller (1983). MS in Genetics and Plant Breeding, and from Colorado State University (1975) with Dr. Jim Welsh. BS in Agronomy from CSU in 1971.
