Professional Experience:
I began my career in 2003 working as an emergency room physician attached to the Neurosurgery department of the National Referral Hospital in Uganda's capital, Kampala, managing both emergencies and stable cases. This was until 2005 when I took up a position as a medical officer and research assistant with a pediatric HIV program (Pediatric Infectious Diseases Clinic, now called Baylor College of Medicine, Uganda) on which I managed pediatric HIV patients and was involved in data collection and analysis on an HIV and micronutrients research project. At the time I also worked on part time basis as a general physician in the largest private hospital in Uganda, International Hospital Kampala, where I also took up administrative duties. I left these assignments in January 2008, to pursue a Masters' training in Australia and returned in 2009, at which point I took up a position at Makerere University where I have worked as a program officer and research scientist on the Regional East African Community Health Policy Initiative (REACH-PI) until now, on an EU-funded health policy and knowledge translation program running in 7 African countries. On this program I was tasked with developing and evaluating methods of incorporating research evidence in health policies in low income countries to ensure health systems' strengthening (http://www.who.int/evidence/sure/en/). I was also tasked with capacity building for researchers and policy makers. On this project my main achievement was the development of a model for a rapid response service to meet policymakers' urgent needs for research evidence about health systems in low income countries, a model that is being adopted in three other African countries, Canada and Brazil.
I also continued to work on a part time basis at the Emergency Room of a private pediatric clinic - Children's clinic Kampala. I have also worked on different policy and research projects during this time, and consultancies in the same field. For example I worked as Consultant Biostatistician for the USAID/World Bank/CapacityPlus project on Human Resources for Health. I have also just completed an assignment for the Belgian Technical Cooperation on assessing the capacity of districts in Uganda to execute agreements with the Belgian government for institutional capacity building at the local government level. I have also been facilitating policy dialogues for example the recent Nairobi dialogue to reform primary eye care policies in Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania in February 2014.
Education:
I hold a Bachelor's degree in Medicine and Surgery in 2002 from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda. I also hold two masters: a Masters of International Public Health from the University of Queensland in Australia (2009) and a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Makerere University (2010). I am currently a doctoral candidate of a twin program between McMaster University in Canada and Makerere University in Uganda on which I have completed my research and are awaiting to defend my thesis by the end of this year.
