Professional Experience:
Elizabeth Solomon is a trained mediator and holds degrees in journalism and in law with post-graduate specialization in International Relations, Human Rights and Law, Development and Social Justice. She started her working life as a journalist winning several awards for documentaries on how pro-growth policies impact upon vulnerable groups. She has a broad base of experience in rights based development and political affairs and has worked extensively on post conflict recovery in the field, serving also at headquarters, with the United Nations and with other International Organizations, including OXFAM.
Elizabeth’s post conflict work has focused on supporting local efforts to build resilient democratic national institutions in Kosovo, Bosnia and Somalia. Her work on human rights and development has been in Guyana, Brazil and India. She spent five years in The Netherlands where she worked with academic institutions including The Institute for Social Studies in Den Haag and the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights in Utrecht. As a Senior Political Affairs officer in the Department of Political Affairs, she served at UN headquarters in New York and then as Deputy Coordinator of the Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, where she served as a senior member of the mediation team for three years.
Elizabeth joined UNDP Sierra Leone as the Peace and Development Adviser (PDA) in February 2014. The role of the PDA is primarily to support the Resident Coordinator and the UN Country Team, particularly on the implementation of peace preservation initiatives in collaboration with national counterparts from government and civil society, including developing a culture of dialogue and the establishment of conflict mediation and mitigation mechanisms
Elizabeth is a national of Trinidad and Tobago.
