Professional Experience: |
Experienced Country Director & Program Director in the governance and voice & accountability sector, with focus on Africa, Middle East and Asia.
I have directed three USAID governance programs in Rwanda, Jordan and Serbia, and designed and overseen USAID programs in Iran and Iraq. I have developed regional strategies for international NGOs. Recently returned from my base in Kigali, where I managed programs in the DRC, South Sudan and Rwanda. An international program assessment described me as: " ...truly an outstanding professional with impeccable integrity."
Before working in the development arena I had a career in television and radio, first working as a reporter, then producer and finally as CEO at Kenya Television Network and MD of the Broadcast Division at the Nation Media Group. As a broadcast executive I launched channels and built networks across East Africa.
I specialise in identifying new talent and supporting the launch of new services. I am retained by a Rwandan apps company, called Sokkaa, a platform for African football fans.
Since 2000 I have directed operations for international development organisations with responsibility for annual budgets in excess of a million pounds – with recent over all accountability for combined budgets around £12m annually.
As country director I been trained in the implementation of contracts and cooperative agreements for DFID, USAID and other international donors. I established and implemented two complex multi-million dollar media programs in Serbia and Jordan, accounting for funds in excess of $25m. I also procured equipment for program offices as well as building materials and specialist equipment for grantees and partners in-country. I can follow US Government procurement rules including travel regulations and requirements. As country director, this knowledge allowed me to effectively establish a third USAID media program in Rwanda, following terms and conditions stipulated by the contracting department of USAID. All assessments of my financial reporting has been endorsed by donors over a total of fifteen years directing programs.
I have experience working for lengthy periods of time in post-conflict or on-going violent environments in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kosovo, South Sudan, and northern Kenya. I also lived for ten years in Serbia (immediately after the NATO bombardment, and in Jordan during the period of bombings in Amman).
I began my working life as a journalist covering the violent civil conflict in Northern Ireland during the 1980s and as a television producer on assignment in Iraq, during the introduction of the no fly zones and the deployment of gas attacks on Kurds in the 1990s. I also worked in Zimbabwe during the inter-ethnic civil war around Bulawayo. I negotiated with insurgents in northern Kenya to protect my television news crews while MD at Nation Media Group in the early 2000s.
