Professional Experience: |
I have worked as a broadcast journalist since 1988, working in radio and television as a producer, reporter and presenter. I am currently freelancing as a senior programme editor at Al Jazeera English. This position involves considerable responsibility, as well as hands-on expertise. Leading a production team of 12 producers, six newsgathering specialists and a further dozen technical colleagues, I supervise the building of sequences of items in hour- or half-hour-long news programmes. The role requires decisive leadership on issues from judging the credibility of news sources in the Middle East to preventing libel on air.

Education: |
After writing two books and various academic articles, I sought to maximise my potential by undertaking a PhD in the Department of History at Reading. I decided to investigate in greater detail the reasons for British involvement in Sudan, not least as a counter-balance to my earlier work on the Sudanese historiography of the same period. My thesis was completed under the title ‘Gladstone, Gordon and Sudan (1883-5)'.

Affiliations and Achievements: |
During my broadcast career, I won three prestigious awards. The first came in July 1991, when I won the Sony Award for ‘Best Breakfast Programme’, as presenter and producer on the BBC World Service programme 'Network Africa'. In May 2009, the programme I co-presented, ‘The World Today’, won the Sony Gold Award for News and Current Affairs Programme. And in October 2012, I won the Association of International Broadcasters Award for ‘Best Live News Coverage (Radio)’ for my reporting on the independence of South Sudan the previous summer. I am also an elected Trustee of the Rift Valley Institute and a Board Member of the Sudan Studies Society of the UK.
