Professional Experience: |
In the last 6+ years I have worked as a researcher, producer, reporter and writer with CNBC, the BBC (South Asia), and contributed to India Ink (NYT), Caravan magazine, BBC World Service and National Public Radio.
I consulted with Human Rights Watch and South Asia Monitor on short-term assignments, on child rights, human rights and gender issues.
My experience in the field has helped me build a number of connections with NGOs, think tanks, government agencies and media organizations in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Nepal). During this time I developed an interest in conflict resolution and negotiation, specifically the role of 'language' and semiotic technologies play in any kind of negotiation.
For my thesis I am focusing on negotiations between the Indian government and a small Indian Lisu community. The issue touches upon a gamut of themes - wildlife and environmental conservation, (hill) tribe rights, inter-tribe conflict, land rights, and rural development. All of these concerns - for both the government and the Lisu tribe -can be unearthed, analyzed and addressed accordingly by studying the language employed by the key stakeholders.
