Professional Experience:
After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer teaching high school English in the Central African Republic in 1976, I joined the World Bank as a staff assistant for 3 years in the Europe, Middle East and North Africa region until I went to graduate school.
In 1985 I moved to Shandong, China as a foreign expert to the Shandong Agriculture University to prepare agriculturalists for post-graduate study in the U.S. This was the first year of the Open Door Policy that enabled China's re-emergence onto the world stage.
From 1986-1989 I worked with World Learning to help lead an international au pair exchange program between European students and American families. I managed over 600 cross cultural case studies that helped American families and European au pairs better understand each other and appreciate the rich experience of their time together. I did this by training and managing a national network of volunteers to work with au pair families giving them the support they needed for a successful year in the program.
In 1989 I joined Winrock International to help design, fund and manage a pan-African women's leadership program in agriculture and the environment. Women from East and West Africa won graduate degree fellowships, research opportunities with international agriculture centers, and professional development support as policy makers recognizing the vital role of women farmers who are feeding Africa.
In 1995 I joined the Centre for Development and Population Activities to help lead management and leadership training for women in development countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. These women returned to their countries equipped with skills to serve their communities.
In 1998 I joined Pact as director of training and helped strengthen the capacity of a global network of organizational development practitioners who worked to grow community organizations. I also led Pact's strategy to help communities respond to HIV and AIDS using civil society mobilization tools to deal with the epidemic across all aspects of daily life. These tools were published in a manual entitled Survival is the First Freedom.
In 2002 I moved to Tanzania where I consulted with more than 20 national and international organizations in strategic planning, gender integration, team-building, management skills, facilitation skills, and leadership coaching.
In 2010 I moved to Malawi where I consulted with Management Sciences in Health to strengthen governance capacity of Global Fund Country Coordinator Mechanisms in Lesotho as I had done in Tanzania.
From 2011 to 2015, I joined USAID/Malawi where I served as senior advisor for organization development and communications. I helped involve Malawians and implementing partners in formulating USAID's 2013-18 strategy. I advised mission leadership and devised ways to break technical silos for more integrated programming. I designed and facilitated retreats with teams across agencies, and revitalized rigorous bra
