Area of Expertise:
  • Capacity Building, Training, Advocacy
  • Director, CEO, COP, President
  • Human Rights, Law, Migration, Conflicts, Justice
Professional Experience:
I started my working life at around the time of the dissolution of Yugoslavia, my former country. The first part of my career was in diplomacy, followed by international and human rights law. This was followed by over 15 years in development cooperation and humanitarian aid. In the new Slovenia, international development cooperation and humanitarian assistance were little known. The new relevant legislation and institutions yet had to be established and I was very much involved in this pioneering work.

Since 2000, I founded and/or managed several non-governmental organizations, first the Slovenia based HUMANITAS, which I presided for 9 years. During this time I initiated and led a fair trade movement in Slovenia, in cooperation with the women producers from Burkina Faso, Ghana and other countries. While Humanitas was the first Slovenian NGO working in Africa, it also became the prime organization for global education in Slovenia. Simultaneously, in 2001- 2003, I was also executive manager of the Foundation TOGETHER, specialized in psychosocial help to children in war and post-conflict environments, working in the West Balkans, the Caucasus and in Iraq. During my six years of presiding the Slovenian NGDO platform SLOGA, I worked on the promotion of the international development / humanitarian sector but also on developing the criteria for its implementation, in participation with CONCORD, Eurostep, ECHO and other European organizations. In 2010, I set up the European office of IRD – International Relief and Development, the US based non-profit, of which I remained director during almost 4 years. With IRD, I experienced more of the crisis areas and the challenging environments, with projects in Haiti, Afghanistan and Somalia, among others. I have acquired experience with various donors, mostly with the EU and the Slovenian government, while I have limited experience with the USAID and other donors, such as the government of Austria and some private foundations.

To summarize, my main tasks in the last 20 years consisted of managing organizations and projects, fundraising and proposal writing, coordination of staff and local partner organizations, financial and narrative reporting, recruitment of the project teams, staff capacity building, and networking between various partners and stakeholders. My work included the application of multi-level and cross-sectoral approaches in the fields of rights and education of children, empowerment of women, livelihoods and water provision as well as migrants' and refugee protection.
Education:
Following my high school graduations in Ljubljana and also in Montreal, Canada, I studied law at the School of Law of the University of Ljubljana. I graduated with a topic of racial discrimination and the UN system of protection. I then continued with the post-graduate degree in International law and Organization for Development at ISS in the Netherlands, writing on sustainable development. I am now before completion of my PhD studies in development, with the topic of access to natural resources and development, more particularly on sustainability of mining. During my carreer I attended and successfully finished several RedR weekly trainings, ie. on Managing People & Projects in Emergencies, Needs Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluations, DRR and WASH Fundamentals.
Affiliations and Achievements:
During the last 5 years, I participated in several EU election observation missions, as a long term observer, so election observation became one of my skills too. I participated in missions in Burkina Faso, Uganda, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, East Timor, Malawi and in Peru.

I am also member of MAYDAN, a network of experts and citizens, working on the Mediterranean identity and (inter)culture.
