Area of Expertise:
  • Agriculture, Livelihoods, Microfinance, Rural
  • Capacity Building, Training, Advocacy
  • Communications, Media, Knowledge Management, Editor
Professional Experience:
I have significant experience in all aspects of building media capacity, training and engaging with a wide community both in Australia and internationally.

As an experienced manager, professional communicator, broadcaster and trainer I’ve developed a very broad base of high level skills in:

• Content (radio presenting and producing, reporting, online and cross media content)
• Production team leadership
• Training and development, programming and delivery
• Project initiation, development and management
• Community/stakeholder engagement
• Partnership development

I have managed and developed radio, online and cross media content makers in a variety of circumstances for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). I was closely involved with the advancement of online services in the ABC for many years, and more recently with private and not-for-profit entities.

My international experience has included radio training program design and delivery for AusAid in South Africa, conference coverage for the World Bank funded Asia Pacific Incubator Network (APIN) in Kerala, India, and attending conferences for COMMACT, (Commonwealth Association for Local Action and Economic Development), an international organization providing information, resources and support network for development practitioners and NGOs at a local level throughout the Commonwealth.

I have twice been invited to speak at RadioAsia conferences( 2013 Hanoi/ 2015 Yangon) on social media and media development topics.

I have travelled extensively throughout South East Asia, Europe and Africa. During extensive travel in 2004, I undertook a study tour of various development projects and radio stations in South Africa and West Africa. During this time I commenced a series of privately funded microfinance ventures in South Africa and West Africa providing assistance to alleviate poverty, reduce unemployment and promote self-reliance.

Additionally I have worked on major training initiatives with remote Aboriginal communities in the Queensland and Western Australia. While this is clearly not international development, many would liken the plight of Australian Aboriginal people to those of the developing world. These communities face similar issues, in terms of poverty, lack of education, poor health conditions, and an alarming infant mortality rate and low life expectancy. I have been involved in media for development work, improving skills and technical abilities, project design, delivery and implementation.

My skills in generating content include the creation and management of text, audio, video and social media content that engages audiences. I have twice been nominated for ABC Local Radio’s ‘Website of the Year’ and am an award winning radio journalist.
