Professional Experience:
With over ten years' experience in international affairs, of which six of emergency relief, reconstruction and community stabilization programmes in hardship duty stations, I have an impressive toolkit of program management and humanitarian set-up and coordination skills. I bring proven delivery running successful multi-million dollar relief and recovery programs, leading complex and multi-disciplinary teams, and building strong institutional relationships in insecure and complex environments. I am a flexible and responsive team player with expertise in a range of crisis and development disciplines.
In addition to this crisis-specific knowledge I have a solid track record as a team leader in challenging operational environments characterized by large-scale displacement, extreme beneficiary vulnerability and host government sensitivity. I am rigorous in ensuring project design and delivery is appropriate to beneficiary needs as well as organizational priorities, and my project cycle management has been highlighted as Best Practice by - for example - EU monitors and auditors, as well as internal IOM auditors.
Having worked in several humanitarian crises, as well as within the UN’s humanitarian agency, I also have substantive knowledge and understanding of coordination structures and mechanisms such as clusters/sector working groups and common humanitarian financing.
Whether securing high level political and diplomatic support for human rights defenders under threat ('03-04), advocating for and winning protection mainstreaming aspects to be integrated into government, private and third sector actors' business, development and humanitarian activities ('05), developing and negotiating government adoption of anti-fraud measures and policies around billion dollar aid activities ('06), winning government cessation of forced movement from IDP camps ('07) or repositioning my organization's profile with key stakeholders by demonstrating credible, effective and pragmatic delivery of economic development programming ('08-11) my negotiation and interpersonal skills are effective and credible to stakeholders in large part due to my conviction and practice that most social and economic development benefits from pragmatism, efficiency, faster and more effective delivery, greater partnership engagement and buy-in, and above all tangible results that can benefit stakeholders' strategic needs.
Whether delivering in the aftermath of natural disasters, conflicts and civil unrest or politically sensitive operational contexts, I provide quality, cost-effective and timely results for my employer. I combine the analytical and interpersonal skills required for outward-facing responsibilities with the operational common sense and hard-headed pragmatism necessary to take effective care of vulnerable client groups, challenging partners, and all-hours, high-stress responsibilities.
Education:
With an MSc in the political economy of violence, conflict and development (SOAS, London), I bring a combination of jurisprudence as well as economic expertise. My dissertation examined the roles of private security companies (PSCs) in post-cold war conflicts, examining both the status of security as a public good as well as the international legal frameworks relevant to the existence and functions of PSCs.
My undergraduate degree focussed strongly on gender and violence in Latin America, notably in relation to religious and social mores promoting cultures of violence. This included a year of study in Mexico, where my dissertation on gang culture and constructions of masculinity achieved the highest first class honors of the year.
