Professional Experience:
I have extensive experience that cuts across the academia, health sector, social and community development and the civil society. My management and leadership experience spans over 20 years, at least 15 years of which have been at top management level internationally. I have over 18 years’ practical experience in organizational development and strategic management, with hands-on experience in developing strategic and operational plans for various categories of organizations; and in capacity development for organizational staff, Board members and other key stakeholders. I have managed a wide range of personnel and organizations – from professional bodies to health care units and non-governmental organizations in Nigeria, The Gambia and Uganda; and been a member of the Board of several international organizations. An excellent manager of people, I nurture and empower them; I take pride in building great teams with strong focus on results. I create a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere that enables staff to thrive and strive to maximize their potentials without compromising discipline. A transformational leader with excellent listening and consultative skills, I am also a good team player.
I have led several start-ups in the past, and served as the inaugural Executive Director of the African AIDS Vaccine Partnership (AAVP), Uganda, the inaugural Head of Clinical Services, United Kingdom Medical Research Council, Keneba Field Station, The Gambia, and the inaugural Coordinator, Pediatric Drug Revolving Fund Project, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. I am adept at building relationships, fundraising, and collaborations, and have no problems building partnerships and collaborations.
A trained Medical Doctor, with a PhD in Child Health and Human Nutrition from the University of Glasgow, UK, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Wales, UK. Additionally, I am a member of the Institute of Professional Managers and Administrators of Nigeria, and a member Board of Regents, the Association of Certified Knowledge Management Professional, USA. As the Executive Director of the AAVP, I had high level engagements with AAVP’s strategic partners in Europe, North America and Asia, advocating at the highest ministerial level for the development of HIV vaccines for Africa; engaged the leadership of WHO in Geneva and WHO Afro, the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials partnership (EDCTP), UNAIDS Headquarters and its regional and country offices in Africa, African Ambassadors to Uganda, The African Union Commission, various Regional Economic Communities, and many other bilateral and multilateral organizations, including several Unites States agencies. In today’s globalized economy, my extensive engagement across the globe has enabled me gain experiences in cross sectoral networking that will be invaluable for any organization that engages my services. As the Global Capacity Building Specialist for the Malaria Consortium, a United Kingdom Charity, I provided technical support on capacity building for the organization’s projects and offices across Africa and Asia. Additionally, I have extensive experience in planning, preparation, coordination and delivery of training workshops to a variety of audiences including low-literate audiences, as well as development of project monitoring tools and monitoring and evaluation of projects.
