Since 2010, I have been a Communications Advisor at Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA).
Before CCSA, I was living in a remote arctic community from 2003 - 2009, and held various senior communication positions, including Director of Communications, Health and Social Services, Government of Nunavut, and also own a communication consulting firm.
In 2006, I took a break from living in an indigenous community and moved to Hanoi, Vietnam to work with the International Support Group, a Secretariat to the Government of Vietnam, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Experience highlights: - At the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse, I directed all communications and media planning for the International Symposium on Drugs and Driving, in partnership with policy and communications staff at the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, and Public Safety Canada.
- While working in Vietnam, for the International Support Group (ISG/MARD), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Government of Vietnam, I worked in partnership with UNDP, municipal governments, SIDA, and INGOs to develop a strategic framework to increase policy dialogue between the local, regional and national government.
- Through ISG/MARD, I also collaborated with the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (ICD/MARD) to strengthen dialogue and communication outputs between the Ministry and donor countries. I implemented a complete communications assessment and review, as well as increased partnership opportunities.
- I have developed and managed the complete cycle of multiple funding agreements (methodology, consultation, evaluation and reporting) with the National Aboriginal Health Organization (Canada), local wellness society’s and NGOs in Nunavut, and have written multiple successful funding proposals, such as an antibiotic safety campaign, H1N1, energy awareness campaign, and secured funding for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Toronto for a mentor matching program.
- Seasoned public affairs professional – built and managed national/international partner/stakeholder relationships, advised political/senior staff, front-line staff and subject matter experts.
- Extensive experience in project management and implementation of complete communication lifecycle – objectives, goals, strategies, tactics, key messages, SWOT analysis, timelines, budget, and evaluation for research, policy, programs and services.
- Mentored and managed staff to develop thought leadership skills, build confidence and take ownership of projects.
- Directed media relations on highly sensitive topics, organized press conferences, managed media scrums, acted as spokesperson.
