Education:
Professional engagements
I have been pursuing my career in teaching and research relating to environment for the last fifteen years. This mutually supportive professional engagement (i.e. teaching and research) helped me very much to investigate, understand the environmental/ecological problems clearly and then present/interpret the results before the learners and wider audience efficiently. I use conceptual/theoretical frameworks (like sustainable development concept, environmental pragmatism etc.) to interpret results within a wider context. These engagements, specially research efforts, made me skilled in using different qualitative (e.g. PRA, FGD), quantitative (e.g. questionnaire design, survey and sampling design, analysis of statistical data), cross-cutting (like EIA/SEA, climate change related) and spatial analysis (e.g. GIS, GPS and remote sensing based) methods. In addition, being a Geographer, I have strong field orientation and experiences to understand problems at local scale and to relate (social) problems with physical processes and challenges. My capacity to assess the interconnected problems (i.e. physical and social) critically and interpret the results logically and systematically helped me to publish field investigation based results in many avenues (e.g. academic journals, books, popular articles in the newspaper, NGO newsletters etc.).
Contributions in biodiversity/ environmental assessments and EIA
I contributed in developing national biodiversity assessment report (4th National Report 2010) for the Department of Environment (DoE), which was later submitted to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) of the United Nations. Recently I have finished Terminal Evaluation (TE) of a flagship project, supported by UNDP titled CWBMP (Coastal Wetlands Biodiversity Management Project). I have also conducted EIA of National Oceanographic Research institute (NORI), planned to be set in southeastern coastal district (i.e. Coxs Bazar). My EIA exercise and proposed EMP (Environmental Management Plan) and recommendations were accepted and helped NORI to get environmental clearance from DoE. I also contributed in conducting SEA (Strategic Environmental Assessment) for Actionaid of proposed climate change adaptation interventions in Bangladesh. In 2008, I lead a plant taxonomic survey project for BRAC Tea Estates, where I used GIS and remote sensing based mapping techniques. The results helped BRAC to take informed decision to conserve genetic biodiversity (specially wild banana varieties) in some parts of the tea gardens.
Professional experience on climate change research
I have been working on climate change issues focusing on (i) impact assessments in different sectors, (ii) adaptation planning/design for the affected people, (iii) needs assessment and capacity building activities of the communities so that they are more resilient for coping with adversities. In this connection, I would like to mention that as National
