Professional Experience:
The main body of my work has been in SBCC (Social and Behavioural Change Communication), providing hands-on strategic thinking, technical leadership and direction in areas as diverse as HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, TB, domestic violence, disability, civic registration, emerging infectious diseases and safe abortion. Goals have included individual behavior change, social normative change, strengthening external relations, and maximizing policy impact.
I have worked with institutional teams and partners to build SBCC capacity, developed original approaches in SBCC for social transformation, and created new tools and processes for fostering dialogue and community engagement.
I have been engaged since 1986 in communication around issues of women, children and youth, with focus on reproductive health including HIV and AIDS, mother-and-child health, domestic violence, safe abortion. TB, malaria. In the last five years, my portfolio has included both communication and advocacy around high-impact emerging pandemic threats that affect, health, livelihoods and food security.
I have worked in diverse, high-stress projects in multi-donor multi-institution environments requiring cooperation and collaboration, in Africa (Botswana, Kenya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Malawai, Zambia, South Africa), South Asia (India, Bangladesh and Nepal) and Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Thailand, Viet Nam, China, Indonesia).
My other skills include video film direction and editing; graphic design and documentation; project management; web presence and social media; technical and financial management; and mentoring.
I have led medium-sized (up to 20) multi-national, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams in project work. I have deep experience working with donors in projects funded by USAID, CDC, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, among others, and have worked with UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNFPA.
I am currently based in Bangkok with his family, and work as an independent communication and advocacy consultant for hire, in all the areas mentioned above.
