Professional Experience: |
Although my current expertise lies in environmental communications, I’m what would be considered a “Renaissance Woman”, in that I’ve lived in various developing nations, working for nonprofits and private industry in various sectors. Before moving abroad, I was project architect on multi-million dollar construction projects. My international experience includes the following: • 20 years’ experience in developing nations – including cross-border work in Afghanistan - in the areas of construction, project management, sustainable development, natural resource use and degradation, energy consumption and alternative energy options; • 3 years as editor at English-language newspapers in two countries: The News, Mexico’s only English newspaper, Editor, International/Business sections; and The Jakarta Post, Indonesia’s largest daily English-speaking newspaper, as a copy editor/contributor using Adobe InDesign and InCopy software • More than 25 years’ experience in disciplines requiring superior writing, verbal and cross-cultural communication skills, ranging from construction design and management in the U.S. to conducting alternative energy workshops for Afghan teachers in Peshawar, Pakistan
The primary reason for this eclectic career path is that my husband had the work visa (his company was CBM, International, a nonprofit NGO working in health care) in the nations we lived and I was the “accompanying spouse”, raising our two children. This provided me the opportunities to experience cultures and the international communities we were a part of in various capacities, as my CV below details. However, my entire career has been one of communications, and I have more than 25 years’ experience in disciplines requiring superior writing, verbal and cross-cultural communication skills.
Our institutions need not just specialists, but generalists, such as what I am. My BS is in the field of engineering, my MA is in Energy and Environmental Analysis, and I have post-graduate studies in ecological justice, enabling me to see the ‘big picture”, and how systems develop, interact with each other and depend upon each other. I’m well-versed in Microsoft Office, Excel, Publisher and Power Point computer software and various forms of social media such as Facebook, blogs and Twitter; I’m intelligent, have a sense of humor, good team leader as well as member, learn quickly and like challenges.
